Have you ever heard something about God that seemed true on Sunday, but didn't seem to work on Monday? The great thing is that God didn't leave us to figure it out alone! He designed us to relate with others like a family. A family is a place where you know each other, warts and all, and still love each other. A place where you stick together in good times and bad. A place where the rubber meets the road, and you're on the journey together. If you are interested in joining some others on the journey at Live Oak, here are some places to start.

Probably the best place at Live Oak to be connected and grow is a small group. We currently have several types of open groups, including mens, womens, couples, singles, and mixed groups. To find a group that fits you, click "Find a Group" above and specify "small group/ care" as the type. Or you can contact Associate Pastor Adam Morrow with any questions.

Trace and Christine Hunt - Our Town

While studying at Texas Tech University, Trace took a summer off to be a part of a Campus Crusade Summer Missions Project. There he met Christine, a student at Texas A&M. In 1992 they were married, and the following year joined the staff of Student Venture, the high school and junior high outreach of Campus Crusade. Over the past 13 years they have become convinced that the key to reaching high school students is college students. They are also convinced that the only way they can expand their influence is by aligning themselves with key campus ministry movements. Their desire is to see God raise up laborers for the spiritual harvest. In the Summer of 2006, Trace and Christine transferred to the Campus Ministry to begin work at Texas Tech University, where it all began. They can't imagine doing anything better-suited to their passions.

They have three little girls with whom they share time. Charis was born in 1997, Brynn in 2000, and Ginger joined them in 2005. They love raising them in the midst of a ministry of evangelism and discipleship with college students.

Mission: The mission of Campus Crusade for Christ is to turn lost students into Christ-centered laborers.

The university setting provides a great opportunity to minister. Students are making life decisions with regard to beliefs, values, and priorities -- we want them to do so in light of the truth of the gospel.

Far too many young men and women will come and go to the University without having had the chance to hear how they can know Christ. Additionally, many who are already Christians will come to the campus and get swept away by the currents of the culture. Our desire is that God will use us, as well as our staff team to penetrate this culture.

In working on campus, our goal is to win students to Christ. We spend much of our time in the residence halls and Greek houses, talking to students about how they can know God personally. By initiating relationships and addressing needs on their "turf", we've found students to be very open to the gospel.

As students come to faith, or when we meet those who are already believers, our hope is to build them in their faith. Through discipleship, small-group Bible studies, and ministry training, we help students to fall in love with Jesus, mature in their walk with God and influence those around them.

The hope is that we can then send them out to reach the campus, and eventually the world for Christ!

For more information, go to: Campus Crusade at Texas Tech

NEED: Volunteers for MISSION LUBBOCK - Seeds & Needs

Mission Lubbock has available opportunities for volunteers 10:30 to 4:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. FYI - operating two days per week (9 days in April) 183 families were served in April. With 5-1/2 hours per day available and an average of 20.3 families per day, obviously, Mission Lubbock needs help on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Volunteers needed for carrying food boxes to cars, helping clients with clothing and household selections, receiving and sorting incoming donations, repair of incoming donations, etc.

On Friday mornings, Live Oak has a men's small group that meets for Bible study and breakfast here at the church. We are very happy in our surroundings and most of us are plugged in and serving here at Live Oak in some way shape or form. We have been looking for some opportunities to serve out in the community that's outside of our church walls. If you know of someone in need (needs lawn mowed, paint, things fixed around the house, e.t.c.) please contact Brian Findey at 798-5583 or email at brianf@live-oak.org. Thank you and God Bless!

Brian joined the Live Oak staff team in 2001 as the part-time Director of Building & Grounds, and in 2004 he became a full-time staff member as both Music Director and Director of Building & Grounds. Before coming to Live Oak at the invitation of one of our members, Brian was a classic rock and blues musician who often played in local clubs & bars. Since that time God has allowed him to pursue his passion for writing and recording music in a new setting.

Brian is married to fellow staff member, Jenny Findley, and they have two daughters, Tara and Katy. Brian loves spending his time hanging out with and discipling his team members, and he can often be found camping at the KOA.

During the series, we will discover that God made us to reach out together by teaming up to serve our city. We will partner with Mission Lubbock to meet the physical needs of the needy in our city.

Click Here for Mission Project list and sign up sheet! What are we doing? An Extreme Makeover! In addition to filling their food pantry, as a church we are going to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty serving Mission Lubbock. During the 40 Days series, each small group will sign up to take a shift cleaning, sorting, and organizing at the Mission (17th and Upland). Our goal is to enable them to more efficiently gather and distribute food, clothing and other items to the community! Stay tuned for more details!

What is Mission Lubbock? Actually, Mission Lubbock and Live Oak Community Church have a lot in common. Both started because visionaries were impressed by God to do something different because things as they were - were not meeting needs. Both started in a home and gradually grew. Both depended on prayer and word of mouth. Both depended (and still do!) on donations. Both are overseen by a Board. Both have prayer warriors that support the ministries. Both have been mightily blessed by God.

About four years ago, Mission Lubbock was born in the heart of a gentle Godly woman named Judy Cooper. The Lord had led her into contact with many of the "forgotten people" in the Lubbock community who were in need of food, clothing, blankets, everything for a household and beyond. Judy mentioned the needs of her new friends to whomever the Lord led into her path, and donations of all kinds started coming in. She started distributing the donations from her home but the situation soon became quite large and a better solution was needed. The FBC at Carlisle had disbanded and the building was given to Mission Lubbock as it was to be called. For the last year, Judy and several stalwart volunteers have assembled and sorted through all kinds of donations and have set up a mission organization that has been open on Tuesdays & Wednesdays but will soon have the capability of ministering five days a week.

Where is Mission Lubbock? It's now in the former Carlisle First Baptist Church building at 1711 Upland.Who is Mission Lubbock? Judy calls them "the forgotten people". They may take the shape of someone who has just gotten out of prison and needs a new start, an elderly person who doesn't have access to a piece of necessary medical equipment, a single mom who needs food for her children, a homeless person who needs a blanket or a clean change of clothes, a man who needs a mattress for his children. The list is endless.

How does Mission Lubbock operate? I think you get the picture. Donations. And that's where Live Oak comes in. The first service phase of our 40 Days of Community emphasis is through a canned food drive: Food from the Heart. You'll be hearing about subsequent exciting service opportunities actually at the Mission Lubbock site in the coming days.

Food Drive at Live Oak: February 3 - March 9, 2008

Sherry joined the Live Oak staff team in December 2000 after previously serving on another church staff for 20 years. After a short time off, when the opportunity came up for someone to step into the role of Office Manager at Live Oak, Sherry felt the Lord leading her, once again, to serve on a church staff since her spiritual gifts & strengths are in the area of serving & administration. She also assists with the leadership of several of Live Oak's special events such as Live Oak's all-church Thanksgiving Dinner & the summer Picnic/Baptism, and serves as the coordinator for Live Oak's Lemonade Stands at the Fair.

Sherry and her husband, Bobby, have lived in Lubbock since 1977. They have 3 grown children, Heather, Hollie, & Heath, and 4 grandchildren, Madison, Gracie, Brycen, and Kylie.

Sherry's passion is teaching preschoolers about God & His love for them. She is a part of the leadership team for Live Oak's Acorn Club and loves teaching the 2 & 3 year olds on Sunday mornings.

No Title - Small Groups

Small Groups are the place where a lot of the real growth and life change takes place at Live Oak. It's the place where people that really know you (and still love you) help you assimilate abstract Sunday truths into concrete Monday realities. We do this in four big ways.

Loving - A small group is a safe place to be known over time and be loved for who you really are. No pretend happy faces or public personas - just real people.

Learning - A loving small group is the perfect place to explore the truths of the Bible and apply them in practical ways.

Serving - One product of growing and learning in a loving community is discovering just how God made you to fit into his family. A small group is a great place to discover and practivce the special gifts and abilities that God has given you. There is nothing better than playing the role you were made for! Whether it is teaching, encouraging, hospitality, etc.. small groups provide a chance to serve and serve with people that you do life with!

Reaching - Doing life together with people that really know you and love you anyway, that challenge you and learn with you, and that feel much joy from doing what they were made to do is not only a great experience for you - it is very attractive to others. Small Groups are a place where neighbors, friends and family members get a glimpse into what following Jesus is really about. When a small group is working right, people are drawn to the picture of Jesus they see there, and they want to be a part of it!

When small groups of people gather together to follow Jesus by loving, learning, serving and reaching - lives change! If you would like to connect with a group, here are three possible next steps.

1) Ask someone you know at Live Oak what small group they are a part of and join them.

2) Fill out a small group interest form and we will match you with a small group.
During February and March 2008, Live Oak small groups will be participating in a series entitled 40 Days of Community. To get connected with one of these 6 week small groups, click here!

3) Click "Find a Group" above and search for a group of the type "small group". You can also add other parameteres to your search like "day of the week" and "Area of town".
