Doug Halcomb
Doug Halcomb was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He became a Christ follower in high school in 1986. He ended up in Lubbock to attend Texas Tech, which is when he first became acquainted with Chuck Williams, serving as one of Chuck’s youth interns at First Baptist Church. When Chuck felt a call from God to start Live Oak Community Church in 1993, Doug decided to get on board, resonating with Chuck’s vision to start a church that would do whatever it takes the reach the lost and unchurched. Over the next several years, Doug served on Live Oak staff in various roles, including small group leadership, youth, evangelism, and teaching.
While at Live Oak, Doug became best friends with a girl named Jennifer, who had come to Live Oak to help out one Sunday with a drama in a guest role. As it turns out, she never left! They eventually started dating, got married and Jennifer became a Live Oak staffer as well, serving as the drama director for many years.
As a lifelong avid hockey fan, Doug saw the opportunity to serve the local Hockey community when the Lubbock Cotton Kings came to town in 1999. He began by ministering to referees, off ice officials and front office staff, then progressing toward ministering to the Cotton King coaches and players. He found a niche and a passion in this mission field and found it easy to marry his roles at Live Oak with his call to develop relationships with hockey players.
In 2002, Doug decided to go part time at Live Oak, while pursuing a part time ministry role with Hockey Ministries International (HMI). He continued this for a year before finally deciding God was calling him into full time ministry with HMI. It was with a heavy, but God-led heart, that Doug and Jennifer headed for Frisco, Texas in 2005.
Doug served as a full time hockey missionary, in the Chaplain role, for the NHL Dallas Stars, CHL Allen Americans, CHL Lubbock Cotton Kings, the AHL San Antonio Rampage, the CHL Oklahoma City Blazers, and the NAHL Wichita Falls Wildcats. He also served as USA Ministry Coordinator--finding, placing and shepherding volunteer chaplains for 38 hockey teams around the country. In addition, Doug Co-Directed the Hockey Ministries International Christian Hockey Camp in College Station, Texas for six summers.
Doug and Jennifer stayed connected with Live Oak since their departure in 2005, as Doug remained an active part of the Sunday morning teaching team. Doug is pursuing a Master of Arts in Global Leadership through Fuller Seminary. He will complete his course work in 2012.
